For everyday leisure reading, I am fine with a kindle or screen reading. In fact, it’s more convenient so I read MORE. But when I need DEPTH? Then I need paper. Might be true for many others, according to this study.

I am not, in any way, denigrating the power of e-texts to engage us to read. I read so much more now that I can quickly and easily access texts on my Kindle. I am, and my colleagues have been concerned, about the pushing of e-texts in formal education, textbooks on iPads, etc.

What about you?  Do you prefer to read using paper texts or e-texts?

  1. As my strabismus causes my eyes stress while reading, I find the Kindle/Kobo with the e-ink to be very helpful. I understand the different concerns about straining the eyes while reading a screen, but I find the feature of being able to blow the font up to a comfortable size to be a godsend.

  2. I’m curious. The article states, “we found that students were able to better comprehend information in print for texts that were more than a page in length. This appears to be related to the disruptive effect that scrolling has on comprehension.” What about a Kindle/Kobo where you are not scrolling but rather virtually “flipping” a page? There is no scrolling involved.

  3. Personally, I cannot study from a kindle book or any kind of e-reader. Not yet, at least. I need to be able to move back and forth, write on the pages, etc. I imagine the young ones might be better on this, having grown up with e-readers. But for textbook reading, if anyone does that anymore? I think printed paper texts are better for study-reading. I do nearly all my own reading online or on a kindle, however, but when I need to teach a text? I get a paper copy.

  4. I’m reading a novel right now with many characters and I so wish I had that paper copy of the book! I finally took a screen shot of the “characters” page and keep flipping from my kindle book to that image. So I have learned to make up for the deficiencies of the e text, I think. I could make a list and keep it by me, I suppose, but when reading in bed, this is more convenient. I guess reading a kindle is very much more convenient for me when light reading, such a a novel for my own pleasure, and I’ve found a way to overcome its shortcomings. I could turn on a light and write down a list of characters, but I’m too lazy. I want to continue to read until zzzz sleep finds me.
