I think I read To Kill a Mockingbird in high school, but I guess it didn’t make a big impression on me. The novels from high school that influenced me the most were Brave New World and East of Eden, two very different books. On the list of 5, Ulysses sounds the most interesting, if the cleverness outweighs the bad jokes. I have written one poem in a sort of stream-of-consciousness way. It is titled “Sympathy for the Zombie.”
Thanks for the reply. I love To Kill a Mockingbird now, as an adult. It was a brave beautiful book. (So sad about that Go Set a Watchman debacle.) Cool about the poem, and what a great title!
Raymond Chandler was a surprise and an outlier on this list. Moby-Dick is a personal favorite. I love Melville, even his sentences that carry on for pages. Maybe that is why I love his writing so much. Interesting list.
I might tackle Melville again. I love Thomas Wolfe, and he has sentences that can carry on for PAGES AND PAGES, and I loved his writing. Thanks for posting.
